The Hawaiian islands are an embarrassment of riches when it comes to sparkling oceans, gorgeous scenery, long white sand beaches, fabulous local food and culture, incredible resorts and world-class outdoor activities. Kauai is remarkable in that it is the winner in most of those categories! In short, the island is a spectacular lush play ground. There is a good reason why Kauai is called the Garden Isle and Jurassic Park was filmed there. Take a Kodiak boat ride from the North Shore to the Napali Coast to experience its soaring cathedral peaks, crystal blue waters, dolphins and turtles playing in the surf and rainbows. Go kayaking on the Wailua river to a cascading waterfall (one of 100’s on the island). Go mountain biking through spectacular dream-like scenery on the Wai Koa Trail. Stroll in the beautiful laid back town of Hanalei – a charming surfing town with cute shops and restaurants that will take you back to the old Hawaii. Go hiking in the breath-taking Waimea Canyon – the second largest in the US. Hang out at sunny Poipu beach in the south. Yes, I really do love this place.
This is the premier resort hotel on the island. It’s located on the lush north shore with one of the most spectacular views of any resort in the world. Period. You can enjoy breakfast on the Makana Terrace and watch whales and dolphins jumping around with Hanalei Bay in the background and rainbows filling the sky. There is a sprawling pool and beach with great service and once again views to die for. One of the best golf courses in the US is next door and Hanalei town is just a few miles up the road. Rates from $565.
Cozy restaurant with delicious tapas style food and drinks. Reservations a must.
Delicious and unassuming super fresh Mexican food in a strip mall near Kapaa. Plenty of locals eat here and for good reason. Delicous tequila drinks all at reasonable prices. Reserve in advance.
This place is a must. Off the beaten path near the Kilauea Light House. This is a small fish shop with casual picnic tables outside. You pick the fish you want, they grill and serve it a variety of ways. The Ahi Tuna wrap is insanely good. This is one of those places that you will talk about when you get home.
Yes it sounds unusual and you will be surprised. This is an authentic less-flashy and commercial luau on the North Shore. Fun, good food, up close and personal. Reservations a must.
